Vendors working in Abaita Ababiri Market in Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District are set to renew their leadership. In a highly contested election, several aspirants turned out to register their candidacy last week.

During the nomination exercise, the vendors asked government and the town council leadership to come up with a policy which would help them overcome the challenges they are facing in the Market.

The vendors also urged the leadership to add effort onto the problem of rubbish in the market and the increased number of people who have markets outside the market because they take away customers and stop them from entering the market hence failing to sell their produce.

“I have come back to contest so that I can consolidate our achievements and as well protect the property of the people in the market,” Bruhan Ssemakula said after his nomination.

Ssemakula who is the incumbent chairperson of the market said he will not give up the fight against makeshift markets and street vendors that frustrate the sales of the market vendors who pay taxes.

Only 200 market vendors have so far registered to participate in the polls on June 30, 2022.
